I'm Glad You Asked!

A newsletter from Allie Nimmons

Hi! Welcome to issue #16 of my newsletter. I hope you don't mind, but I changed up the design a little bit! What do you think?

I designed this newsletter to provide a healthy mix of WordPress news and links and resources, along with some additional stuff from me personally.

If that's what you'd like to read - let's go!

🔗 My Favorite Links

Here are some of my favorite links from the past few weeks. Hopefully there's something cool in here you can use! This edition, the links are pretty WordPress heavy but there's been a lot going on!

🔥 Necessary Trouble

Welcome to a new section of my newsletter where I'm going to complain/bitch/explain something that has really been bothering me lately. Think of it as a rant, but with (slightly) less cussing and finger pointing and more trying to get to the bottom of an issue.

I went on a pretty epic rant recently on Twitter. I honestly ruffled quite a few feathers. I don't say this a lot, but I feel like it was very brave of me to really speak my mind in this way without worrying about the consequences. If anyone is offended by this thread, I am truly sorry. But I really felt like I had to speak up and say what I knew was right. 🙏

👩🏾‍💻 Newest From Me

It's been quite a while since my last newsletter and a lot has happened in that time! Personally, a lot of bad. Professionally, a lot of good. I'm only going to share the good with you. Here's some quick links to help you get caught up.

Things I discovered/enjoyed recently:

📺 Abott Elementary is my new favorite show. I cannot believe the first season is already done and we have to wait goodness knows how long for season 2. I've been a fan of Quinta Brunson since her Buzzfeed days and when I tell you my melanated little heart just glows thinking about what she has accomplished...😍

🎮 Minecraft. It's my comfort game and I'm still reeling from trying to play Eldenring, shut up.

🎥 Everything Everywhere All At Once. Not exaggerating when I say it's the best film I've seen in the last few years. It immediately landed a spot on my top ten favorite movies of all time. Please go see it. See it now. On the biggest screen you can.

🎶 Welcome to Nightvale Podcast. I'd heard so much about this podcast and I read the book a while ago. A few weeks ago they were doing a live show in Austin and I went. Which of course was amazing and encouraged me to finally start listening to the podcast. It's the most darkly comforting thing I think I've ever experienced.

🍲 I'm obsessed with this simple but delicious breakfast smoothie. 1 cup ice. 1 cup milk. 1 cup cold brewed or instant coffee. 1 frozen banana. 2 scoops chocolate protein powder. Use less ice if you like a thicker smoothie.

I've been hard at work writing and refining and now recording my next LinkedIn Learning course! This time, it's the new and updated WordPress Essentials course. Here's a photo we took while recording my "talking head" portions. Usually I'd be in a studio to record these bits, but we did them in my home office! It was an amazing and fun experience.

💌 A Challenge

This is the part of the newsletter where I provide a mindset challenge for you to focus on.

My challenge for you this edition is to do a social media detox. That could mean a lot of things, depending on what you need right now (which is the first and hardest thing to ask yourself.)

Maybe remove a few apps. I recently deleted my Instagram off my phone and have been taking a break. It's bee helping with my mental health so much. Is there an app on your phone or a profile that doesn't actually offer you any value?

Unfollow some people. I am trying to keep myself at a cap of following only 500 people on Twitter. Honestly, it should be less. But keeping my timeline smaller means more meaningful content.

Mute or block some phrases or topics. I recently blocked a lot of Ukraine content from Twitter. Not because I don't care, but because it was unavoidable to find political content when I use Twitter primarily for WordPress content. I can read the news when I want, rather than seeing it everywhere I turn.

Adjust your privacy or content settings. Do you feel nervous or anxious about posting things? Maybe you're finding that a lot of trolls or negative people are interacting with you? Adjust your settings so that only people you want can reply or DM you.

I get annoyed when people point to social media as the root of all evil. Instead, I recommend being in the habit of using your social media mindfully and intentionally.

xoxo Allie
