I'm Glad You Asked!

A newsletter from Allie Nimmons

Hi! Welcome to issue #14 of my newsletter. I hope you don't mind, but I changed up the design a little bit! What do you think?

I designed this newsletter to provide a healthy mix of WordPress news and links and resources, along with some additional stuff from me personally.

If that's what you'd like to read - let's go!

πŸ”— My Favorite Links

Here are some of my favorite links from the past few weeks. Hopefully there's something cool in here you can use! This edition, the links are pretty WordPress heavy but there's been a lot going on!

πŸ”₯ Necessary Trouble

Welcome to a new section of my newsletter where I'm going to complain/bitch/explain something that has really been bothering me lately. Think of it as a rant, but with (slightly) less cussing and finger pointing and more trying to get to the bottom of an issue.

This morning I came onto Twitter and found this tweet.

The amazing and beautiful Deborah Edwards-OΓ±oro shared a link to WordPress.com, in which they announced that for people on the .com Business or eCommerce Plan, there will be 6 paid plugins available within the plugins page.

This upsets me. It upsets me because, as Deborah points out, they are all WooCommerce plugins, which is owned by Automattic. Feels a little like stuffing their own pockets, no?

It upsets me because oftentimes, people using WordPress.com are new to WordPress and not massively tech savvy. And they may not aware that SO many plugins out there are free. Why are we putting what are essentially ads for plugins front and center?

And what kind of door does this open for paid plugins in the plugin directory? Will companies soon be able to buy a place at the top of the list? Will this happen for the themes and block libraries as well?

How do you feel? Am I over-reacting? Will this have positive repercussions that I'm not seeing?

Wordle has me by the throat and I'm not even mad.

One of my goals for 2022 is to grow a YouTube channel! You can watch my first 2 videos here. I have 2 more videos planned to drop next week, so please subscribe to get them as well as to help support my channel!

I really fell in love with the aesthetic of my YouTube channel. So I redesigned my website to match it and I'm really proud of how it looks! What do you think?

Did you know I'm speaking at WordFest Live on March 4th? I'll be talking about how to reduce stress and anxiety by using Admin Day to plan and organize your freelancing life!

One really cool thing I get to do this year is help out at The Repository - my favorite email newsletter! Rae Morey has been producing weekly newsletters all about WordPress for months now. I'm working alongside her to bring more diversity and a wider array of voices to the publication.

Things I discovered/enjoyed this year:

πŸ“Ί Midnight Mass (from the creator of The Haunting of Hill House, one of my favorite shows) and Queer Eye (this season took place in Austin - where I live!!)
πŸ“™ How to Explain Racism to White People. I just started reading it and oof.
🎢 Fire From the Gods which is a black-led metal band. I didn't know I liked metal very much until I found them.
🍲 I recently recreated a soup my Grandma used to make from memory! It was really special and delicious. :)

πŸ’Œ A Challenge

This is the part of the newsletter where I provide a mindset challenge for you to focus on.

The elusive work-life balance is feeling harder and harder to maintain the longer the pandemic goes on. I feel like it should be getting easier, but it's not.

If this is something you're struggling with, I challenge you to adopt at least 1 of these things:

1. Remove all your work stuff off your phone. Email, Slack, Twitter... whatever you use to connect to your work life, delete it. Just use your phone for fun and wasting time.

2. Refine your morning routine. Take one hour in the morning to take care of YOU before you dive into work. For example, have a sit-down breakfast, read a book or journal, or take a walk. Whatever you do, avoid screens until you've been up for at least one hour.

3. Experiment with a 4 day work week, or half-day Fridays. I take either Wednesdays or Fridays off, depending on my workload. It's been amazing for my mental health, even if I spend that day working on work-related side projects. It gives me the grace to put myself first, which carries great vibes through the rest of the week.

4. Reach out to one friend every day. Make it the first or last thing you do in your work day to send a text, Slack, or DM to someone and just ask how they are. This is something I want to try doing because I cannot tell you how great I feel when a friend reaches out unprompted.

Do you currently do any of these things? Think you can adopt one? Which one? Let me know!

Happy almost Black History Month! Please donate to a Black charity.
xoxo Allie
